Meet the team

Professor Diederik Bulters is a Consultant Neurosurgeon at University Hospital Southampton and Honorary Professor of Neurovascular Surgery at the University of Southampton. He is the Chief Investigator (CI) of the ROAR Study and leads the largest research team in the UK focussed on the management of intracranial aneurysms and subarachnoid haemorrhage.

ROAR

Mr Samuel Hall is a Endovascular Fellow at the Barrow Neurological Institute, USA. He was previously a Neurosurgery Registrar at University Hospital Southampton and is Co-CI of the ROAR Study.

Mr Frederick Ewbank is a Neurosurgery Registrar at University Hospital Southampton and NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow at the University of Southampton. His work is primarily focussed on the ROAR-FLOW Study and the ROAR-GP Study.

Mr Benjamin Gaastra is a Neurosurgery Registrar at University Hospital Southampton and Academic Clinical Lecturer at the University of Southampton. His work is primarily focussed on the ROAR-DNA Study.

Ms Jacqueline Birks is a Senior Medical Statistician at Oxford University Hospitals. She was previously a statistician on the International Subarachnoid Aneurysm Trial (ISAT) and is involved in all components of the ROAR Study.

Ms Rebecca Middleton is the Founder and Chair of Hereditary Brain Aneurysm (HBA) Support. She is a patient representative and lead for the ROAR-DNA Study.

ROAR-DNA

Professor William Tapper is a Professor of Genetics at the University of Southampton. He has previously studied the genetics associated with outcome following subarachnoid haemorrhage.

Dr Andres Vallejo Pulido is an Associate Professor of Computational Biology and Transcriptomics at the University of Southampton. He has expertise in molecular biology and bioinformatics.

Professor Ian Galea is a Professor of Clinical and Experimental Neurology at the University of Southampton. He has extensive experience investigating outcomes following subarachnoid haemorrhage.

Professor Henry Houlden is a Professor of Neurology at the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology. He is co-lead for the ROAR-DNA Study.

Professor Ynte Ruigrok is a Stroke Neurologist and Professor of Genetics at the University Medical Center Utrecht, Netherlands. She has expertise in genetic research relating to unruptured aneurysms.

ROAR-FLOW

Dr Alberto Marzo is a Senior Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Sheffield. He has expertise in computational fluid dynamics relating to aneurysms.

Dr Rahman Attar is a Lecturer at the Department of Electronics and Computer Science, University of Southampton. He leads the ATTAR Lab which is focussed on application of artificial intelligence technologies in healthcare.

Professor Mahesan Niranjan is a Professor at the Department of Electronics and Computer Science, University of Southampton. He has expertise in machine learning and computational biology.

ROAR-GP

Dr Nazrul Islam is an Associate Professor of Epidemiology and Medical Statistics at the University of Southampton. He has expertise in big data analysis using advanced epidemiological study design methodology.

Dr Oliver Rivero-Arias is a Senior Health Economist at the University of Oxford. He has extensive experience using observational data and evidence synthesis decision analytic models to inform cost-effectiveness evaluations.
